A slow afternoon with clay, making something small to keep.

In this two hour handbuilding workshop, you'll create your own clay ornaments — objects to hang on a tree, a wall, a branch, or simply keep somewhere you can see them.

We’ll begin by looking at simple forms, textures and patterns for inspiration. You’ll then shape your ornaments by hand and make them your own through carving, imprinting and surface details.

You can create something seasonal, something inspired by nature, or simply follow a shape or pattern you’re drawn to. There is no template to follow and no experience needed, just time to experiment with clay and make something that feels like yours.

The workshop is intentionally small and relaxed. There will be tea, coffee, conversation and time to slow down and work with your hands.

Your ornaments will be fired in the studio and ready to collect within a few weeks, in time to bring them into your home for the season ahead, and hopefully for many seasons after.

Workshop will be held in English.

What will I make?

You'll make a few small clay ornaments during the workshop. You can choose different shapes, patterns and textures, and experiment with carving and surface decoration and underglaze colors. They can be seasonal, inspired by nature, or simply objects you enjoy looking at.

Do I need any experience with ceramics?

Not at all. Everything will be guided step by step, and the workshop is designed for complete beginners as well as anyone who already enjoys working with clay.

How long is the session?

Two hours. Please arrive on time so we can begin together and make the most of the afternoon.

When do I get my ornaments?

Your pieces will be fired in the studio and ready to collect approximately in a few weeks after the workshop. You'll receive a message when they are ready.

What if my piece cracks in the kiln?

It occasionally happens, clay is a natural materials that carries each touch. If something doesn't survive the firing, I'll let you know and we can talk about the options.

How many people are in a session?

I keep the workshops small deliberately so everyone gets time and attention. You can expect a 6-12 people.

Can I come alone?

Absolutely. Most people do. The group is small and the atmosphere is relaxed, so you won't feel out of place.

Where is the workshop?

Treehouse NDSM, Amsterdam-Noord. Take the free ferry from Amsterdam Central (NDSM ferry) and it's a short walk from there. Exact directions will be sent after booking.

Is everything provided?

Yes. Clay, tools and everything you need for the workshop are provided. There will also be tea and coffee.

Just wear something you don't mind getting a little clay on, or use one of the studio aprons.

Can I reschedule if something comes up?

Please let me know as soon as possible if you need to change your booking and I'll do my best to find you a spot in another session. Please note that I'm not able to accept changes or cancellations within the last week before the workshop.
